  • 1 Oven
  • 1 Electric Mixer
  • 1 9-inch Square Baking Pan


  • cups flour all-purpose
  • ½ cup granulated white sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter softened
  • tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup boiled water


  • Preheat oven to 350°F and prepare baking pan with cooking spray
  • Beat butter with electric mixer until it becomes creamy
    ½ cup unsalted butter
  • Add sugar to butter and beat until fluffy
    ½ cup granulated white sugar
  • Add egg and molasses and beat on medium until batter is smooth
    1 egg, 1 cup molasses
  • Sift flour, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, ginger, and salt in a separate basin
    2½ cups flour, 1½ tsp baking soda, 1 tsp ground ginger, 1 tsp ground cinnamon, ½ tsp ground cloves, ½ tsp salt
  • Add dry ingredients to batter and mix until well-combined
  • Mix in water until smooth and pour into pan
    1 cup boiled water
  • Bake for about 35 minutes or until inserted toothpick comes out clean
  • Allow cake to cool for about an hour before applying frosting
